Hair is one of the most beautiful assets a woman can possess. Even if you don’t have it in abundance, with proper styling and dressing, it can look just perfect and beautify your entire personality.

However, hair does easily become damaged by the environment, regular styling, use of bad hair products etc. Its quality can also be affected by bad diet, overall health or for simple genetic reasons. Also, with our entirely busy schedules, it becomes quite tough to maintain the quality of our hair and give it the proper care and nourishment it needs. Hair care is essential.

Still, everyday round the corner, we do see women with shiny manes and fabulous hair that can certainly give Beyoncé a run for her money. What I don’t understand is how these women actually get ad-like perfectly shiny hair. I know it’s the camera and styling tricks in the ads but, what about real life?

After a lot of research and some old-school tips from my grandma, here’s a guide to perfect hair care and maintaining your hair to perfection. Because some of us mere mortals do not have those shiny locks, we can try and care for what we’ve got to make them look fabulous with these hair care tips.

Try home hair care remedies

Home remedies are an inexpensive and totally natural way of hair care. Things like eggs, beer and even vodka, are all extremely good sources of shine for your hair. The masks made from home ingredients like eggs and yogurt not only helps your hair look shinier, healthier and more beautiful but they also help them to grow faster.



One simple home remedy for hair care would include mixing one egg yolk with one tablespoon of extra virgin oil, one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of vodka thoroughly. This mixture should be massaged from the roots to the tips and be kept for about 40 minutes. For better results, you should cover your hair with a shower cap or a towel. Once done, you can wash your hair and use your usual conditioner. It’s a great formula for instantly shiny hair.

Moroccan oil

Moroccan oil treatments are considered miracle workers for hair care. They aid in restoring the natural softness and shine in the hair. They also prevent split ends, repairs damaged hair, control frizz and work wonders when used in hair styling as well.

You can opt for Moroccan oil treatments at a nearby hair salon or get Moroccan oil products at home for treating your hair and get a shiny, soft and silky mane.

Warm oil treatments

This is something that has been recommended to us by our mothers and grandmothers since ages. Although most of us don’t really want to be stuck with oily hair for half of the day and tend to avoid the rituals completely, oiling actually works wonders for our hair care.

Oiling is essential for healthier, shinier hair. However, you don’t need to be stuck with oil in your hair for the entire day. Warm some oil (it can be almond, coconut, cold pressed virgin coconut, lavender, olive, anything) and massage it into your scalp for about 10-15 minutes only. Keep it on for an hour at least and then wash and condition your hair as you usually do. When done on a regular basis, this is an amazing home remedy for hair care.

Over-the-counter ideas

There are a lot of products available in the market which not only give instant shine to your hair but also protect them in the long run. However, remember to always pick out a product from a well-recognized and quality brand so that you don’t end up compromising the quality of your hair for a few bucks.

Changes in your diet

If you want shinier, healthier hair naturally, try introducing more and more protein enhanced foods in your diet. Proteins are the building blocks for your hair, so it’s essential that your meals include a good portion of proteins. You can try fish, chicken, eggs and also nuts in your regular meals to help build and restore the natural quality of your hair.

Do’s and Don’ts of hair care

Never ever brush your wet hair. Instead, run a wide toothed comb through your locks as they become really fragile after being washed.

When using conditioner, don’t wash it out entirely. Keep a little in and rinse your hair with cold water. If you wash it out completely, it simply destroys the whole purpose of conditioning your hair in the first place.

Always massage your scalp when you wash your hair. This helps in dislodging grime and also improves blood circulation which keeps your hair healthy.

Try sleeping on a silk pillow cover and never sleep in tight plaits or buns. Let your hair free or tie them in a very loose plait while you sleep if you want untangled hair when you wake up in the morning.
