Seductive black liner and bronzed skin – the makeup trends at the spring/summer 2014 shows were as desirable as ever. Once again, hot, bright lips were the look to yearn for, while a nearly makeup-free “raw” beauty made the runway again. Take a look at some of the top 2014 makeup trends.

Top Spring 2014 Makeup Trends

Hot, Bright Lips

In Milan and Paris, it seemed like spring was going to be a season of “natural” lips. But it was another story entirely in New York with bright, matte lips being featured at Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra, and Rag & Bone. The message went to London Fashion Week too where the red colors came with a bang at House of Holland, Mary Katrantzou and Antonio Berardi. Hot orange lips are a huge hit too since the electric shade looks flattering on almost every skin tone.

Sultry Black Liner

Looks like black eyeliner will never go out of style. This season black eyeliner is to be worn with a teenage, rebellious attitude. At Jonathan Saunders, Versace, Blugirl and Just Cavalli it was applied with swipes of smudgy kohl coupled with little else, while at Stella McCartney, Rodarte and Missoni it was sultry and feline. Shows like Carven featured a neat black line on the bottom lashes that looked more punky.

 Raw Beauty

Every season on the runway, you can always see some variation of natural beauty, but this season things were as pared back as they can possibly be. Although models at some shows wore almost nothing on their faces, there is an art to getting it right. At Alexander Wang and Balmain the bare looks were created by only using a hint of concealer, while at shows like Proenza Schouler, Isabel Marant and Jean Paul Gaultier only a sweep of subtle neutral blush was allowed. Finally, lazy is good!

Pastel Eyeshadows

The makeup trends summer 2014 saw a pretty alternative to the smoky eye with a wash of shadows around the eyes. At Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana and Rochas we got to see pastel hues, while nude shades were seen at Ruffian, Giambattista Valli and Emilio Pucci. Pink shades around the eyes are usually considered unacceptable, but Burberry’s Wendy Rowe made it look pretty. But pink was not the only pastel shade seen. There was blue at Prada, Antonio Marras and Badgley Mischka, soft violet at Rochas and shades of green at Giorgio Armani and Costello Tagliapietra.

Golden Glows

According to the makeup trends spring 2014, a bronzer is to be your best friend this season. The golden-glow tanned skin is the way to go this season as shown at House of Holland, Donna Karan, Michael Kors and Topshop Unique, where a 70s-inspired glow ruled the runway. A Studio 54 vibe could also be felt by looking at the bronze eyes at Jason Wu’s show, while gilded beauties were on display at Dries Van Noten and Christian Dior via gold-leaf partings and golden brows.

Graphic Eyeliner

Eyeliner has also gone graphic with angular shapes, which may take a little bit of practice to get it right. Graphic liner makes this retro obsession more modern yet still sexy. At Anya Hindmarch and Roksanda Ilincic, a simple black liner was taken to new heights just by keeping a steady hand. At Celine, Haider Ackermann and Saint Laurent glitter, liners and shadows were layered. Makeup artist Lucia Pieroni made a winged shape on both the outer and inner corners of the eyes at Missoni, while Tom Pecheux at Anthony Vaccarello stenciled a triangle above the model’s eyes.

White Lines

Every season dark liner is seen on the runway, but it seems like both white and black liner will be sharing the spotlight this spring. White liner on the top, bottom or both eyelids looks fresh and fun, especially when it is paired with an orange or hot pink lipstick. At Kenzo white liner on the upper eyelid made minimal makeup look cool, whilst at J. JS Lee models showed the awakening effects of applying a white line on the waterlines.
